Preserving Every Sacred Moment of Your Nepali Wedding

Nepali weddings are a vibrant, emotional tapestry of ancient Vedic traditions, rich cultural rituals, and deep family connections. Whether it is a traditional Hindu ceremony, a grand Newari Supari wedding, or a Buddhist Sherpa celebration, the sheer number of fast-moving rituals can be overwhelming. As premier wedding photographers in Kathmandu, we have compiled the ultimate photography checklist to ensure no precious moment is missed.

1. Pre-Wedding Rituals (Mehendi, Haldi, and Grahapravesh)

The celebrations begin long before the main wedding day. These intimate, colorful pre-wedding moments deserve equal spotlight:

The Henna Details: Close-up shots of the intricate Mehendi patterns on the bride's hands and feet, often hiding the groom's initials.
Haldi (Uptan) Splashes: Joyful candid photos of family members applying turmeric paste, captures of laughter, splashes of yellow, and raw emotion.
Bridal Chura & Makeup: The transformation of the bride, close-up shots of traditional gold ornaments, red glass bangles (Chura), and the finishing touches.

2. The Arrival of the Janti (Groom's Procession)

The arrival of the groom and his entourage (Janti) is full of energy and music:

The Janti Band: Musicians playing traditional instruments or modern brass bands leading the groom's vehicle.
Groom Entrance & Milani: The welcoming ceremony where the bride's family meets the groom's family. The exchange of garlands between fathers and close relatives.
Dwar Puja: The bride's sisters blocking the entrance gates, demanding a playful ransom (bargaining) before letting the groom in.

3. The Swayamvar (Exchange of Garlands)

This is the official commencement of the wedding ceremony under the Mandap:

Garland Exchange (Dubo or Sayapatri): The iconic shot of the bride and groom exchanging garlands, often lifted up by friends to make it playful.
Ring Exchange: Close-ups of the wedding rings being placed on fingers, showcasing the joy on their faces.
Walking around the Mandap (Pheri): The couple circling the sacred fire, symbolizing their partnership in life.

4. The Kanyadan & Sindoor-Pote (The Core Rituals)

These are the most sacred and emotionally charged rituals of a Hindu Nepali wedding:

Kanyadan (Giving Away the Bride): The emotional moment when the bride's parents place her hands into the groom's hands, accompanied by holy water.
Sindoor Daan: The groom applying red vermillion powder (Sindoor) along the parting of the bride's hair. This is one of the most crucial shots of the day.
Pote & Tilahari Placement: The groom placing the yellow bead necklace (Pote) and the gold Tilahari around the bride's neck, symbolizing their marital bond.

5. The Farewell (Vidaai)

The Vidaai marks the bride's departure from her parental home, filled with raw tears and bittersweet smiles:

Tears of Departure: Emotional hugs between the bride, her parents, siblings, and childhood friends.
Rice Throwing: The bride throwing handfuls of rice or coins over her shoulder, wishing prosperity to the home she is leaving behind.
The Departure Car: Wide shots of the couple seated in the decorated wedding car driving away, reflecting on the rear-view mirror.
